Altoona Mirror sports editor Herb Werner, June 11, 2008
Former Altoona Mirror sports editor Herb Werner died Tuesday night at Altoona
Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
Werner, 79, had been battling cancer for the last several months.
Werner was the Mirror sports editor from September 1958 until 1980 and was the executive sports editor from 1980-83. He had previously worked at the Tyrone Daily Herald and grew up in Chicago.
He covered Penn State football for the Mirror through the early 1980s and was also known for local bowling and golf coverage. He was a member of the Golf Writers Association of America.
“Herb jump-started me in the business, and I was grateful for the opportunity he gave me,’’ said Jim Lane, who worked with Werner for more than 20 years and was the Mirror sports editor from 1980-2002. “When I joined the Mirror in 1961, we were a two-man staff. He was always real easy-going to work with, yet like any boss, demanding in his own way.
“He really loved high school wrestling, and he did as much as anyone to promote bowling in the area. And he loved golf. He was still playing up until a few weeks ago.’’
Services are being arranged by Feller Memorial Home in Tyrone, and a full obituary and tribute will appear in Thursday’s Mirror.
