James A. "Jim" Dooley Jr.
Death Notice: James A. "Jim" Dooley, Jr., 69, of Gettysburg, PA entered into God's eternal care on Thursday, October 31, 2013, at his home. Jim was the loving husband of Mary Youngblood Dooley for 47 years. Born April 5, 1944, in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late James A. and Helen Martin Dooley. He is survived by his two children, Molly Dooley Wiles and her husband Steve and Daniel Dooley, a sister, Eileen Dooley Norton and her husband John. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Sarah Youngblood Wiles, Steven Jacob Wiles, and Andrew James Wiles as well as many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his sister, Peggy Dooley Norris. Coach Dooley was a member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg where he served as a lector.
Coach Dooley was a graduate of the class of 1961 from Mount St. Michael's High School in the Bronx. He was a 1965 graduate of the University of Scranton where he was a 1,000 point scorer for the Royals' basketball team.
He taught for thirty-seven years in the Pennsylvania Public School System at Shippensburg H.S., Cumberland Valley H.S., and Gettysburg H.S. He and his family lived in Iceland for a year in the early 1980's, where he served as the National Basketball Coach of Iceland. He also taught at Delone Catholic H.S. in McSherrystown, PA for six years and coached the Delone Catholic Squires basketball team for the past eleven years. Coach Dooley has amassed more than 700 career wins in his coaching career. He won his 700th game in the District 3-AA semifinals last season before defeating Trinity in the District Championship game last March.
He is a member of the Pennsylvania Basketball Hall of Fame, the South Central PA Sports Hall of Fame, the Adams County Sports Hall of Fame as well as the University of Scranton' Wall of Fame. Coach Dooley will be remembered by all as a teacher, coach, and friend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 10:00 AM from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 45 West High St., Gettysburg, PA with Fr. Bernardo Pistone, Celebrant. A Viewing will be held at the church on Friday, November 8, from 5-8 PM and on Saturday from 9-10 AM. A Private interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg following the Funeral Mass. The Delone Catholic Squires Basketball team will serve as Coach Dooley's Pallbearers. The Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg is assisting the Dooley family with the funeral arrangements.
